The use of Hanif and Hanafa in the interpretive literature of the Holy Quran

Abstract

The word Hanif and its plural Hanafa have been used twelve times in the Qur'an and it has been used in various meanings in narrative and historical texts. In these sources, the Hanafis refer to a group that lived with different beliefs from the Arab ignoramuses of the Arabian Peninsula. Scholars have different views on this religion; Some believe that it is a religion and some of them believe that Hanif is a kind of attribute for religions and not an independent religion. In this article, first of all, it deals with its etymology and after extracting the lexical meanings and its evolution in Arabic, it is stated that according to the Qur'an and the Prophetic tradition and the available documents, the word Hanif was used in the beginning of Islam.
