A Comparative Study of Gothic in Iranian and Western Literature

Abstract

One of the most well-known schools of fiction in the world is the Gothic school, and the induction of fear and panic is one of its main components. Gothic literature entered Iranian literature after its rise in the West, and inspired writers to write Persian Gothic stories. This research has been done with the aim of comparative study of Gothic in Iranian and Western literature. The research method was based on content analysis and the required information was collected in the form of libraries. The results showed that what influences the formation of Gothic stories and distinguishes them from other stories is the atmosphere and characterization that is common in both Iranian and Western literature. But the creation of space in Western Gothic due to the existence of places such as churches, castles and tall buildings, in such places, but in the Persian Gothic usually occurs in deserted spaces away from the city, cemeteries or uninhabited villages. In terms of characterization, in Western Gothic, the existence of a Gothic creature causes horrific acts such as murder and destruction, but in Persian stories, Gothic characters are usually characters with illness and mental disorders.
