The role of ministers and scientists in building and equipping libraries in the Samanid era (261-395 AH / 874-1004 AD)

Abstract

The prosperity of Islamic civilization, the growth of science and technology, and the need to preserve and perpetuate scientific knowledge, turned the attention of Muslims to the writing of books, and the collection and maintenance of books led to the construction of libraries. In Iran, the Islamic period, the tradition of librarianship and the construction of libraries, as an issue with the necessary background, took on a specific course with the formation of independent and semi-independent local governments. In this regard, the Samanid Emirate, as a government that paid attention to the Iranian-Islamic tradition in accordance with its emerging requirements and, of course, its own ideological tendencies, tried hard to build and take care of libraries. The main question of the research is: What effect did the intellectual-cultural prosperity of the rulers, ministers and scientists have on the construction and continuation of the libraries of the Samanid period? The results of the research indicate that the Samanid Emirate, taking advantage of the scientific and cultural traditions resulting from the renaissance of Islamic civilization in the 4th century AH and the efficiency of princes, powerful ministers and scholars who put tolerance in the agenda, as well as attention to Iranian cultural traditions that cared about books and libraries. Marked a flourishing period in the library tradition that stood out as a lasting model in the history of central Iran.
