Abstract

The Sublime concept in mind-frame of postmodern writer Jean-Francois Lyotard is attached to artistic creation instances. From this point of view architectural design can be studied as an artistic element. The main objective of this research is pathology of Karaj hosing during the postmodern era. The major municipal development of this metropolitan area took place during last hundred years alongside the traditional housing being obsolete, thus most part of the structures belong to either early modern architecture style and the following styles. The aim of this qualitative research is to formulate and study the main causes of dominancy of eclectic and inefficient architectural styles in Karaj housing built environment design. The Sublime matter in Lyotard's notions and its co-related concepts has been studied through library research regarding this issue. Library resources, formal municipal statistics and field research have been used to study effective on Karaj housing styles. The research question here is how to conceptualize pathology of Karaj hosing in accordance with Lyotard's Sublime matter? The main theory is that the architecture sphere of Karaj hosing could be analytically referred and formulated due to the postmodern term Sublime in Lyorard's written criteria.
