Reflection of Citizenship Rights in Qajar Time Travelogues

Abstract

In this article, we examine citizenship rights in Iran during the Qajar era from the point of view of European journalists traveling to Iran during the Qajar period and have identified the dimensions of citizenship rights in them. Real travel letters written in different historical periods, especially during the Qajar period, contain valuable information that can be studied by realities of social, political, economic, geographic and natural status. It may not be possible to reach them in other sources. The methodology used in this research is a descriptive analytical study of books, articles, and resources related to the topic. From this point of view, the rights of the citizen, who lies in the deepening of these facts, can be found among the writings of the travelogue. The result of the research shows that the Iranian society in that era did not enjoy a favorable status in terms of citizenship rights and observance of its standards, and many people were deprived of these natural rights, which were their rights. People have not been aware of almost all aspects of citizenship rights, including their natural, political, economic and judicial rights, and if they are aware, they are less likely to benefit from it. People did not have any political participation at all, and autocratic and authoritarian governments at the top of that king did not allow them. In terms of livelihood, people were in dire straits.
